How To Backup/Restore Firefox Bookmarks, Web Browsing History, Extensions Or Other Add-ons When Planning To Re-Format Harddrive (OS)

You can make Firefox opens and browse as usual even after you do a fresh OS reinstallations or formatting the harddrive (where the OS were installed), no dialog box appears as you use the browser for the first time and most importantly, your bookmarks, passwords, web browsing history, extensions or other add-ons still intact and functioning.

Follow this simple guide on how to backup and restore all those important and useful items. For this, I'm going to use Windows 7 but it's all the same with other operating systems, the differences is only the file path that I'll list it later.
1. At Windows explorer > Organize > Folder and Search Options > View > tick at Show Hidden Files, Folder and Drives radio button > Apply > OK (you have to enable the hidden options because the file path that we're going to backup are hidden).

2. Go to C:/Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox copy and save the Firefox folder to removeable media or another harddrive partitions. If you open the Firefox folder, you can see all of your previous settings, add-ons, extentions etc. in it .

3. To restore the backup after you've done with reformatting, install Firefox as usual and copy/paste the backup Firefox folder into C:/Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\ , overwrite the folder if the Firefox folder already exist, make sure you've show hidden files and folder options enabled first in Folder Options.
That's it. Open Firefox and surf as usual.

Below is the location list of Firefox folder path in different Operating Systems.

Windows Vista & Windows 7
Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox
Windows 2000, XP & Server 2003 Documents and Settings\UserName\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox
Mac OS X ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox
Linux and Unix systems ~/.mozilla/firefox

Leaked Windows 7 Build 7100 Image May Have Been Infected With Trojan

Microsoft have warned users numerous times not to download leaked Windows 7 builds because of the possibility of modified or infected images. Users should understand the risks involved when downloading and installing leaked builds, as we continue to see an increasing amount of fake build releases.

Unfortunately, one of the first build 7100 leaked on “the bay of pirates” was modified. Many users jumped on this build right away, not realizing it was modified and infected with a trojan. The torrent was later taken down. Even if you did not download build 7100 from the suspected site, you should still always do a hash check to ensure your image was unmodified. You can check the MD5 hash of an image by using MD5Checker (download here).

The image had the following incorrect build string: Windows_7_Ultimate_x86_RC_Build_7100.4866522
This is the MD5 hash of the infected image: 2dc70d7c851d76d49ac71167141222f7
The correct hashes should be the following:
x64: 98341AF35655137966E382C4FEAA282D
x86: 8867C13330F56A93944BCD46DCD73590
If you believe you have an infected image, you should get rid of the image immediately, update your anti-virus software and do a complete scan.

If you were a victim of the infected image, it may be better to wait until May 5th when Microsoft releases Windows 7 RC for public download. Download safely.

How To Slipstream Or Intergrate Microsoft Office 2007 Service Pack 2 (SP2)

Microsoft Office 2007 has received two service packs (Office 2007 SP1 and Office 2007 SP2) up till now. Service packs contain important stability, reliability, performance and security improvements, and include all updates released till service pack is finalized.

The integrated Office 2007 installation ISO image or disc helps save update installation time after installing Office 2007 RTM or SP1 (for SP2), and ensure that the newer SP is installed.

Microsoft Office 2007 setup program will install any new updates that found inside the Updates folder in the installation media. The updates must be in .msp file format (MSP or Windows Installer Patch) in order to be recognized during setup installation process.

Follow the steps below in order to slipstream and integrate Office 2007 SP2 into original Office 2007 RTM (or with SP1) installation files.
1. Extract and copy the contents of the Office 2007 SP1 (or RTM) image or disc to a temporary folder.

For example, C:\Office2007

2. Download and copy the Office 2007 SP2 Update file to another temporary folder.

For example, C:\Office2007SP2

3. Open a command prompt, and run the following command to retrieve and get the Office 2007 SP update MSP, (choose "run as administrator" if you use Windows Vista or Windows 7):

C:\Office2007SP2\office2007sp2-kb953195-fullfile-en-us.exe /extract:C:\Office2007\Updates\

Note: The drive letters and folder names names may vary according to your own preferences.

4. Accept the Microsoft Software License Terms to start integrating the service pack to Office 2007 installation files. The process will expand several .msp files to “Updates” folder.

5. Optionally, uses disc image manipulation programs to re-create a fresh Office 2007 SP2 ISO image, or burn the Office 2007 SP2 installation files inside C:\Office2007 folder to a disc media with disk burning software.
The setup for Office 2007 will now automatically apply updates for SP2 during instalation.

How To Fix Blank Or White Shortcut Icons On Desktop

Once in a while, the shortcut icons on the Windows desktop may suddenly been changed or became blank or ‘white paper’ icon, where supposedly the icons should be colorful and customized in style and color. It’s as if the icon for the shortcut has been removed or unassigned, and been replaced with default blank icon in white.

In order to fix the problem where shortcut icons turn to blank icon, try to refresh or rebuild the cache database for icons. There are many system management software utilities that may reset the icon cache db automatically, but here’s how to reset the icon cache db manually.
1. Go to Organize -> Folder and Search Options -> View tab, and select Show hidden files, folders and drives, and uncheck Hide protected operating system files (Recommended).
2. Go to the following folder:
C:\Users\\AppData\Local\
3. Once inside the folder, delete IconCache.db. Create a new file named IconCache.db, and set it to Read Only attribute in Properties (if the file is not read only, the cache won’t be reset).
4. Then restart the computer. Remove the Read Only attribute of IconCache.db file, and the icons cache will be refreshed.
The steps will restore the desktop shortcut icons to their lawfully icons.

Windows XP, Windows Vista & Windows 7 - Quick Fix For Networking Problems

I've posted on "How To Repair/Fix Slow Internet Connection Issue On Windows XP & Vista" using ICR earlier, but unfortunately PCLive (the company of ICR) will cost you some payment to fix the internet problems on your computer. They play some tricks here (I thought it was a free troubleshooting/repairing because the software is freeware), I'm sorry for that for not testing the software first before posting it here.

So, we left that software aside and here's how to quick fix networking/internet problems manually using a few commands in your computer.

If you've lost or having a slow internet connections due to virus attacks (clean it up first before proceed this) or after you've doing a wrong internet tweaks or also after using some internet tweaking softwares, use this document to repair. These commands reset TCP/IP, Windows Socket, and Windows Firewall.

For Windows XP
1. Open a command prompt by clicking on Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt
2. Type the following commands, pressing Enter after each command:
  • netsh int ip reset reset.txt
  • netsh winsock reset
  • netsh firewall reset
NOTE - Windows XP must have Service Pack 2 (SP2) installed in order for these 3 commands to work properly. Otherwise, only the first command will work.
3. Restart the computer.
For Windows Vista and Windows 7
1. Open a command prompt as Administrator by clicking on Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> right-click on Command Prompt -> choose "Run as administrator"
2. Type the following commands, pressing Enter after each command:
  • netsh int ip reset reset.txt
  • netsh winsock reset
  • netsh firewall reset
3. Restart the computer.
Summary

If the commands are typed in properly but errors occur, Windows networking may be heavily damaged. In addition, if these commands do not return errors, yet do not fix the Internet connection after the computer has been restarted, consider further troubleshooting:
  • Power-cycle any external networking devices, i.e. routers, cable modems, DSL gateways, etc.
  • Check Device Manager for any problems with Network adapters, i.e. if they are disabled or if drivers are not properly installed.
That's it.
