New WGA Update To Detect And Nuke Windows Vista SoftMod Activation Crack

Microsoft has decided to tighten the grip on ability for pirates and crackers to crack and bypass Windows Vista activation scheme, by releasing an WGA update to Windows Vista Ultimate Edition based system that will detect the presence of SoftMod hack activation exploit, which is currently been pioneered by Vista Loader. However, it’s unclear if the WGA technology update will indeed detect both SoftMod and Vista Loader, or just SoftMod activation crack, which is the predecessor version to much enhanced Vista Loader.

SoftMod and Vista Loader activation exploit works by modifying boot loader to load a simulated OEM BIOS image with necessary BIOS string in order to activate Windows Vista with respective OEM master product key straight away as if the OS is factory installed without the need to verifying against Microsoft activation server, a convenient provided by Microsoft to OEM manufacturers and customers.

Previously, with the release of Windows Vista SP1 and KB940510 update, Microsoft has managed to shut down illegal Windows Vista PCs activated with Grace Timer, notably TimerStop, OEM BIOS which apply only to Paradox OEM BIOS Emulation, or their variants. In fact, many hackers have wondered by Microsoft does not cramp down on SoftMod activation crack sooner, as SoftMod modifies system files that can be easily detected.

According to WGA blog, the new technology update will be releasing to Windows Vista Ultimate Edition only at this time and only to systems with English as their primary language. In history is correct, the update will soon apply to all Windows Vista systems in a few months.

After installing the update, if the system has detected the SoftMod activation exploit, the following screen will be shown, with warning that reads “Windows must be repaired. Windows has found software that circumvents Windows activation and interferes with its normal operation. The presence of such software may indicate that your copy of Windows is counterfeit.” Te crack is labeled as SL08-009.

However, detection of SoftMod crack won’t disable the computer, and all functionality of the system continue to be usable. The updte will simply alert the user if the system is affected (or installed) with SoftMod, OEM BIOS and Grace Timer activation exploit, and will provide more information about that exploit and how to fix or remove the crack.

Microsoft Publishes Changes Made In Windows 7 RC

Microsoft has published a list of some of the changes that have been made to Windows 7 since Beta (Build 7000.) If you’re running a build that is newer than 7000, you will see that some of these changes have already been incorporated.

The list covers a wide range of changes from UI tweaks to Windows Media Player. Here’s a list of some of the more interesting major changes that we spotted from the list:

  • More taskbar space: Tweaks were made to the taskbar to accomodate more items. Users can now fit in 24-39% more items, depending on the resolution of their screen and icon size.
  • Windows Key + # shortcuts: Pressing the windows key and a number on your keyboard will now launch one of the first 10 items in your taskbar. If you have a “Slot 1″ program running and you press Win Key + 1, tapping the 1 will cycle through the multiple windows you may have running for the specific application. Think of it as an alt + tab for just one program.
  • Taskbar drag and drop Open With: With the new taskbar and jumplists, Microsoft intends the desktop to be less often used. You can now open a file directly with any application in the taskbar by holding the SHIFT key and dragging the file to an icon in the taskbar.
  • Improved multi-touch usability: Several improvements were made to provide a more realistic experience. The on-screen keyboard no longer lock special keys and will function in the exact same way as a physical keyboard. Right click can be easily activated by touching an item with one finger and tapping with another finger. Drag and Drop, and selection have also been made improved so you can now select text within scrolling pages.
  • Major revamp of Windows Media Player: Windows Media Player was one of the more heavily criticized features of Windows 7. The new Windows Media Player will natively support the .mov format that is commonly used for video capture in digital cameras. The Media Library will no longer display files that WMP doesn’t support playing such as Apple’s lossless .M4A format. Playback can be resumed when a computer wakes up from sleep mode. And the Now Playing view has been made to appear more lightweight and compact.
  • Changes to libraries: Windows Explorer’s header has been improved to display more useful information to users. Non-removable FAT 32 drives can now use the libraries feature. The ability to drag and drop a folder into the Libraries node in Windows Explorer has been removed due to many users getting confused when trying to copy folders, which resulted in the deletion of the original folder. Instead, you can now create a library using the right-click context menu.
  • Performance enhancements: Improvements in performance are usually made based on tracking user-generated data from beta users. One example of this has been using Perftrack to keep track of how long it takes users to launch the Start Menu. The targeted time was 50ms to 100ms. Prior to the RC build, only 85% of interactions were within the acceptable range. The RC will obtain a 92% acceptance range.
You can read the complete list over at the Engineering Windows 7 blog.

Manage RAM Usage Wisely With CleanMem

How did you manage your Random Access Memory (RAM) usage, is it 100% efficients when your PC running without leak loss? RAM stick becomes cheaper and cheaper nowadays, so we don't really care about usage and leak loss of RAM, but what about for low end PC specs. users, RAM is a critical thing to them?

Most of RAM management software did what so called "wrong job", forced running programs to reduce memory usage and it lead to computer lagging. And "Defrag RAM"? Is it possible to defraging RAM? For me honestly, all of these are nonsense, but ... I found this CleanMem software that work differently and I recommend it to you.So, let's read what the author of this program says,

Ok for once and for all I am going to explain in detail how Cleanmem works, why it works and how it can & can not make a difference in your system.

Every now and then as I go across the net I find forums and pages talking about Cleanmem, and to be honest I am truly surprised to see the people throwing fits about the program being a memory cleaner and how if it is a memory cleaner it must not work! Yet they never even try it. Then when I come across pages like on www.raymond.cc who actually took the time to try it and test it makes me feel like my work is appreciated by my fellow geeks & techs as he took the time to try it, he didn't judge before hand. Yet reading comments on his site you will find people shocked it works and others saying it cant work and they didn't try it.

I also get emails of people asking me how it works, and so I decided to make this section to explain how Cleanmem works. So now any questions should be answered and all the people out there who don't even bother testing the program will have no room to talk. Its amazing how a free program I originally made for my customers has been such a headache and a pleasure at the same time. You've got to love the internet.

So now lets start with how Cleanmem works. Cleanmem is very small as it doesn't need to do much. First off Cleanmem doesn't clean the memory from the processes itself! It asks Windows to do that. When the program starts up it grabs a list of running processes. It then grabs the ID of each process and calls the Windows API EmptyWorkingSet for each processes, Cleanmem of course checks the ignore list and skips those processes. Then Windows cleans the process, and once all the processes have been cleaned Cleanmem closes itself.

Well that's the part that seems to freak some people out, if the memory is being cleaned then the process itself will suffer! the memory will be pushed to the hard drive! the world will end! And guess what they are wrong. So let me explain why. The API call only removes memory no longer being used by the process. It doesn't touch memory in use. Here is an example from a visual basic programming stand point.

Dim I as long

I = 20000

Done. Now 'I' has been set as a long number, it has now taken a spot in memory. It then loads the 20000 into memory. At the end of the call the memory is no longer used but still being taken up by the program because I didn't clean it up! A lot of programs do this, they take memory but don't always cleanup after themselves. Well the API is like a little house cleaning. It removes all safe unused memory. When the process runs the function again the memory is then taken again without any difference in performance to the program because it would do it anyways, it wont reuse the old memory, this is why you see program climb and climb in memory usage as you use them. So why let all the unused memory just sit there?

Here is an example, I loaded of my Age Of Conan game, it was using about 600mb of memory, when I run my Cleanmem the memory only lowers to about 500mb, and the game doesn't miss a hit, why? because that 500mb of memory was currently being used and windows didn't touch it, only the memory left over was removed, which isn't going to touch the games performance since the memory wasn't in use. This is also why the page file doesn't grow, cause no memory is being moved away from the process.

Will you see performance increase? Yes if a lot of your memory is being eaten up, plus keeping the processes cleaner adds a small performance increase when dealing with memory. But if you have a butt load of memory like I do you wont see amazing increases in performance, but if your running low on memory it makes a big difference.

If you have a lot of memory why use Cleanmem? Well I use it cause I like my system running tight and clean. Just because my system has a lot of memory doesn't mean I want things sucking it all up if it isn't even using it. That's why I made Cleanmem sort of a set it and forget it. I never need to worry about a program having memory leaks or not cleaning up after itself.

So what I did with Cleanmem was take a built in Windows API and made it easy and automatic to keep no longer used memory free. The program is free, the setup is easy and life is good. So if for some reason you don't want to use Cleanmem, that's fine. I'm not trying to push a free program on people, I could care less if someone doesn't want to use it. But for those of you that do use it I'm glad you find it useful and I'm here if you have any questions or needs.

A quick note on the API call itself. This is the same API used by Microsoft in its empty.exe in the Windows 2003 Resource kit. This is also the same api that all .Net programs use by default when you minimize them and their memory lowers. So now instead of being just for .Net, Cleanmem lets you use it on all your programs.

I hope this answers all questions and helps people understand once and for all about Cleanmem.

Take care!
Shane

And this is a what MajorGeeks says

"Your loosening up unused memory on application frankly works very well. Since this installs unobtrusively and is automated at no memory loss, we decided that some people might love it. Of course many people think these programs are bogus, hence the reference to the "memory debate". Majorgeeks has not added a memory freeing application in years. I'm now glad I did simply because people can debate if it works or not (it does) but the ability to try it, then remove it is important. But for us to add this program was a huge deal simply because they are rarely accepted. Your passion helped it to happen.

I beta test a lot so this is helpful. I also notice it freed up memory from app's that I hardly use. This means, to me, that dozens of app's I rarely use can free up memory for others. Overall, on my 2 gig system, I was able to free up about 200 megs, until I run those programs again, although most were already running or would not be run again meaning that 200 megs was freed.

Tim Tibbetts
http://www.majorgeeks.com"This tool is free.

How to use it?

It's very simple, just download it and install, it'll manage your RAM automatically. If you want to configure a few options of it, just enter your computer "Task Scheduler".

CleanMem works on Windows 2000, XP, 2003, Vista, & 2008 (32bit & 64bit) and also Windows 7.

I hope I explained enough, try it and see the differents ..

What Is Thermal Paste And How To Apply It

What is thermal paste and what does it do?

Thermal paste is a very high heat conductive paste that is used between two objects (usually a heatsink and a CPU/GPU) to get better heat conduction. It fills in all those microscopic imperfections on the heatsink and CPU/GPU that can trap air in them and cause a loss in the heatsink’s performance. Air is a very poor conductor of heat. Thermal Interface Materials (TIM) can be up to a 100 times greater conductor of heat than air.

However, thermal paste is not near as good of a conductor as copper. Thus, too much thermal paste will hinder a heatsink’s ability to cool properly.

This is an exaggerated view of what these microscopic imperfections would look like. All the white area would represent the air pockets, and this is what the TIM would fill in. It wouldn't be such a gap like this, but this just an example to give you a rough idea of what it would look like.

If you could have a perfectly flat heatsink base, and CPU, you would not need thermal paste. But it is impossible to do so, and that’s why we need thermal paste.

Types of thermal paste

There are essentially three types of thermal pastes:
  • Metal based
  • Ceramic based
  • Silicon based
Metal-based TIM’s are the most popular as they have the best performance out of the three. These pastes have lots of little metal particles in the grease that have a high thermal conductivity. One disadvantage of this type of paste is that it is also electrically conductive as well, which can cause a problem, more on this later.

Ceramic-based TIM’s are also a popular solution that doesn’t perform quite as well as metal-based pastes, but the difference is minimal (1-3C). These consist of some form of thermally conductive material with lots of little ceramic particles. The advantage of ceramic-based pastes is that they do not conduct electricity.

Silicon-based TIM’s are usually what thermal pads that come on stock heatsinks are made of. These work well, but nowhere near to what other pastes will. Usually they come with cooling kits.

There are also thermal epoxies, these are basically the same thing as regular grease, but are actually used to permanently attach the heatsink. They are not recommended for most cases, but in some they are of course. One main example for a use of an epoxy is, attaching heatsinks to video memory. Most of the time you use thermal pads that don’t perform very well, so an alternative is thermal epoxy. But the disadvantage is, that most of the time you will not get the heatsinks off once they are put on.

What can be tried to get epoxied heatsinks off is to put the video card in the freezer before trying to remove the heatsink. The low temperature will make the epoxy brittle, so it goes off easier.

Choosing the right thermal paste

When choosing a paste for your heatsink, you have two main types that are usually considered; metal-based or ceramic-based. In most cases people use the metal-based, simply because it performs better as stated before. But nowadays, especially with GPUs, there are a lot of transistors/electrical components that are very close to the die.

So when applying thermal paste, if you are not very experienced with applying it, there is a chance that when you place the heatsink, some of the paste can be squeezed out onto theses transistors/electrical components and cause a short. This is very bad of course and is a nightmare for anyone.

This is where a ceramic-based compound has the advantage. With RAM module heatsinks, ceramic-based is almost a given to use. GPUs and chipsets are also examples that you might want to use a ceramic paste on, unless you are comfortable with using metal-based. But do not use a metal-based paste on RAM. Metal-based is usually used on CPUs that have an Integrated Heat Spreader (IHS). All modern CPUs have an IHS, but some people will actually remove it to get better performance.

For brands of thermal paste, the best around are Arctic Silver, Arctic Cooling, Coollaboratory, and a few others. They make very high quality thermal materials that are the most used by end-users. You can't go wrong with these brands. Other makes will work great, but maybe not as good. For the few extra dollars that are needed for some of the more expensive brands is usually worth it.

Cleaning your chip before apply thermal paste

If you’re installing a new heatsink before you even had a heatsink on you CPU, then there is no need to do this. But in the case of putting a new one on, or changing a video card cooler, then you must clean your chip first.

For this, most used is Isopropyl Alcohol, Acetone, or a solution called ArctiClean. For using the cleaners, use non-linty cloth or Q-Tips (cotton swabs). Q-Tips are great where they're small and easy to get where you want, plus you can also see exactly what you are doing.

For Isopropyl Alcohol, the higher the percentage the better. 70% is not bad, 90% or higher is the most ideal. The reason; the higher the percentage, the quicker it will evaporate and the less residue it will leave. 99% will leave almost zero residue.

Note: Never use any oil-based cleaners, as oil will ruin your coolers performance because it adds an oil layer through which heat travels slowly.

When you have your cleaner, dip your cloth/Q-Tip in, then gently rube the surface of the chip until all the old paste is gone. You will probably have to do this more than once to get it nice and clean. It is usually a good idea to use a credit card to scrape most of the old TIM off, and then use the cleaners.

The exact same process is used to clean the CPU/GPU. Just be careful if you're cleaning the CPU out of it’s socket. If you push to hard on it, you might bend a pin.

Note: Make sure you do not touch the surface of the chip with your bare finger, as your skin has natural oils on it as well.

To remove thermal pads, use a credit card or some other plastic object (do not use a metal object as it could scratch the cooler's base). Then follow the same procedure as stated above. You want to make sure all of the old paste or thermal pad is gone, otherwise it can affect performance of the cooler.

Applying thermal paste

Applying thermal paste is a simple task, but you must take your time as with all things. Remember what the thermal paste does. It gives better conduction between the heatsink and CPU/GPU because it fills in all those little imperfections on the heatsink that cause poor conduction due to having air in them. You only need as much thermal paste as it takes to fill in these little holes/divots.

Some people will “lap”, their heatsink so they get it smoother. This will increase performance even more. The more area that the heatsink has touching the CPU/GPU, the better it will perform. When you lap your heatsink, and you do a good job of it, you will require even less thermal pastes, as these imperfections have got even smaller.

Once your CPU is nice and clean and you have your TIM, now it’s time to apply it.

To apply it, you put a little drop, little being about the size of a rice grain and so it doesn't squeeze out when the sink is reapplied. Once you have the right amount of TIM (will vary depending on the application, GPU will uses less than a CPU with a IHS) you spread it out as thin as you can get it. Heatsinks that are not lapped generally require more thermal paste.

With AS5 and some other TIMs, it's perfectly fine to put a little dab in the middle without spreading it with a CPU that has an IHS. With the mounting force of the heatsink, the thermal paste will spread itself out. In some ways this is a better way of doing it, because you don't have to worry about getting it even. The possibility of having air bubbles between thermal paste and heatsink is also drastically reduced that way. CPUs with an IHS produce heat only in the center of the IHS, where the core is.

Note: It is recommended that you use the little dab in the center without spreading it technique on CPUs with an IHS. On everything else without an IHS (bare die, like a GPU or the picture above right) you should spread the paste out as thin as possible over the die.

Some people will put their hand in a plastic bag or latex gloves and spread the paste out so they don't contaminate it, then use some straight edge (usually a credit card) to get it nice and even. Others will just use the credit card straight away. You want the layer of paste as thin as possible; less than half a millimeter, almost translucent, is good.

Note: If you decide to use a latex glove, make sure you get the powder-free ones. Getting the powder on the heatsink and mixed with the paste will degrade performance.

Another trick that some use is applying the thermal paste to the heatsink base, then wiping it off (not using cleaner, just a non-linty cloth). This assures that all the imperfections on the heatsink are filled as well.

Once you have the paste spread nice and even and as thin as you can get it; it's time to mount the heatsink. Be very careful when doing so, so that you don't have to do it twice. If you put it on, then take it off, you should re-apply the paste. You want to bring the heatsink onto the CPU as level as possible. If you angle it, it can disrupt the paste from spreading evenly.

Once your heatsink is properly mounted and the fan is connected you are ready to boot. It's not a bad idea to go into your BIOS or video card temperature-monitoring program to watch your temperatures for a few minutes. Just to make sure the paste was properly applied and that what ever part's paste you applied doesn't to get to hot.

Most pastes have what’s known as a "burn-in period". Over this period, the performance of the thermal paste will increase, and lower your temperature. Also with heat, the paste will even itself out more. AS5 will generally gain performance (5-8C drop) over 200 hours of break-in period. Having many heat-up - cool-down cycles help speed up the process.
