Resolving Update Server Not Available (Error: 3) In Google Chrome

In the early launch of Google Chrome, I have use it for a while and found that this new web browser from Google had a nice and smooth interface and also quite fast. But my heart was on Mozilla Firefox and still now, so I left Google Chrome behind.

From time to time I read about the development of Google Chrome, it appears that Google has working hard to make Chrome as a great web browser. Updates are available so often, about three or four times in a month, from there we can see the continued efforts from Google. So, this made me interested to install and use Chrome for the second time.

As usual, Chrome installation is quite easy, not write anything in Program Files and only a few data in Registry. All Chrome files and folders are placed at users AppData folder. The first thing I did after launching Chrome is checking the version.

Launch Chrome > click on wrench icon at the top right of Chrome page > click at 'About Google Chrome' and I got 'Update server not available (error: 3)' written in 'About' box. Since the update for Chrome issued regularly, automatic update is indispensable.

So, here's why that error came up and how to fix it:

1. Chrome was installed using a standalone installer.
  • GoogleUpdate.exe the file that run the update was not included in a standalone installer. You need to download and install Chrome using an online setup installer that you can obtain from Google official site.
2. Chrome setup installer was elevated at the beginning of installation.
  • For Windows Vista and Windows 7 users, you need to elevate (Run as administrator) the setup installer for any kind of installations to make the applications run without problems. But, in Chrome installation, if you elevate the setup installer, GoogleUpdate.exe will not installed. This is a known issue with Google Chrome auto-updating mechanism and can be avoided by simply running Google Chrome as a normal user.
3. Google Update isn't registered properly.
  • You need to verify that GoogleUpdate.exe exists in the location specified in the Windows Registry Editor. This means, the path of GoogleUpdate.exe file not the same that written in Registry Editor. For this you need to go to Registry Editor by click on Start button > Run > type in regedit > Enter. At Registry Editor, navigate to:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{2F0E2680-9FF5-43C0-B76E-114A56E93598}\LocalServer32
The 'Default' value should correspond to the location of your GoogleUpdate.exe file. Verify that GoogleUpdate.exe exists at the given path. To verify the correct path, using Windows Search and search for GoogleUpdate.exe. Then make sure the path from search result and the entry in Registry is the same, if it does not, modify the value in Registry to be the same as the GoogleUpdate.exe file path located.
I manage to solved the error: 3 with the solutions number 1 and 2 above and the auto-update function in Chrome works now.

So far, Chrome has improved, better than before. But why Chrome got no sound, even a click sound?
