Resolving Google Update Installation Failed With Error 0x8004071c

Installing Google Chrome is very easy, only takes a few seconds to complete and it seems like Chrome installer is not going to give us any difficulties or errors during installation. But, it has. Some users had encountered a problem when installing Google Chrome that an error box appeared with the error code "Google Update Installation Failed With Error 0x8004071c".

Did you think that error came up because of a bad coded Chrome installer? No, it is not. The error occurs because your computer is currently in Windows Audit Mode and is conflicting with the installation.

When Windows is running in audit mode on a portable computer, that means the NUM LOCK key is always turned on. Users that perform an unattended installation of Windows usually initiated the Audit Mode.
This error also appeared in other installations of Google product such as Google Earth, Google Desktop and etc.. I'm using Google Chrome for an example in this article because it is a widely used application from Google nowadays. Use the following method to fix it, it is the same related error.
Here is a workaround on solving the issues:

1. You need to delete an entry in Registry Editor, so, click on Start > Run > type in --> regedit <-- > and hit Enter.
2. Navigate to the following strings:

In Windows XP:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\Setup
  • At the right pane, right click on 'AuditInProgress' > choose 'Modify' > delete the value data > click OK.
In Windows Vista and Windows 7:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\State
  • At the right pane, right click on 'ImageState' > choose 'Modify' > delete the value data > click OK.
3. You need to restart your computer for changes in registry to take effects and install Google Chrome after that.

If you want to perform a quick fix without having to manually edit the registry entries, follow below steps:

1. Copy and paste below texts into Notepad > save it as --> fix.reg <-- > at 'save as type', choose 'All Files' > save it to Desktop.

For Windows XP:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\Setup]
"AuditInProgress"=-
For Windows Vista and Windows 7:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\State]
"ImageState"=-
2. Double click on 'fix.reg' file to merge the data into registry > click YES for confirmation > click OK when finished.
3. Restart your computer.

Choose which method that you're prefer to use, this should fixed the issue and now you're able to run a successful Chrome installation.
